Charrette 2024: Rethinking Sustainability
Charrette 2024 is an international design workshop held from October 6 to 11, 2024. The event brings together a diverse group of participants to explore the pressing question: What is sustainable? Participants are challenged to navigate the complex landscape of sustainability, with various terms and concepts such as circular economy, zero waste, and climate resilience. Through this exploration, teams work with local collaborators to develop innovative solutions to sustainability challenges.
Participants are encouraged to use resources like the Sustainability Catalogue and the New European Bauhaus (NEB) framework to critically assess their designs. Charrette 2024 aims to address not only environmental concerns but also social and economic dimensions of sustainability.

Local Collaborators
Local collaborators play an essential role in Charrette 2024, bringing hands-on experience and local insights into the project. These organizations from Copenhagen’s Nordvest district collaborate with the international participants, offering real-world contexts to apply sustainable design principles. Here are five key collaborators:

1. Urban Camper: A social hostel with an indoor camping concept, located in Nordvest, Copenhagen. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and inclusive space for travelers and locals.

2. FIRE TYVE: A restaurant and community space focused on sustainable food practices and local engagement. They host events, debates, and concerts.

3. Alice: An intimate music venue in Nørrebro that focuses on experimental and underrepresented music genres, fostering a vibrant cultural hub.

4. Flying Couch Brewery: A microbrewery with a focus on experimental beers and strong ties to the local community. They recently opened a bar with an outdoor area for events.

5. Flok Kantine: A cozy café located in the local library that serves as a community gathering space for residents, students, and culture enthusiasts.

New European Bauhaus: A Vision for Sustainable Living
The New European Bauhaus (NEB) is a core element of Charrette 2024, designed to integrate aesthetics, sustainability, and inclusiveness. Based on the Green Deal, the NEB provides a framework that goes beyond functionality to consider the quality of experiences, climate goals, and the social inclusion of all people.
The NEB aims to regenerate communities and transform environments in ways that are both visually appealing and ecologically sound. Participants in Charrette 2024 will apply NEB principles to their projects, ensuring that their solutions address not just sustainability but also diversity, accessibility, and style.
